Deepening The Bond Retreat-Advanced Communication & Collaborative Groundwork * 3 Spots Left

November 5 @ 5:00 pm - November 8 @ 3:30 pm
$1365

Join senior clinician Heidi Potter for an immersive journey into the heart of equine partnership and collaborative movement.

Many of us spend our time with horses guessing at their needs, often resulting in a one-way conversation where we make a request and hope for compliance. If the horse doesn’t respond, we feel we have to get louder to be heard. Or we just stop asking.

Deepening the Bond is your invitation to stop guessing and start listening. Building on the principles of this three-day unmounted intensive takes the conversation from the field into the arena. As we explore how we can move together with the horses in collaboration, you will learn to shift away from “telling” and into a true partnership where the horse finally feels understood — and so do you.

THE METHOD: A MULTIDIMENSIONAL SUPPORT SYSTEM

This intensive is centered on Horse Speak®, a logical approach to understanding horses developed by Sharon Wilsie. Layered into this clear and effective communication system, Heidi integrates decades of horsemanship experiences, along with mindfulness and body awareness, to help you become a clearer, quieter partner:

Horse Speak: Learn to recognize and mimic the precise gestures, postures, signals (GPS), and breath messages that horses use to communicate.

Centered Presence: Applying principles from Centered Riding and Traditional Eastern Martial Arts to ensure your own body is signaling safety and intent — not tension.

Collaborative Motion: Moving beyond cues and behaviors modification to find the “conversation behind the cues” while working on the ground.

THE INSIGHT

One of the most profound aspects of this work is realizing that we are always communicating. Horses are masters at reading the subtle shifts in our posture and the quality of our energy. During our time together, you’ll explore:

  • The Power of Breath: Using equine breath messages to signal safety and invite a horse into a shared space.
  • Intentional Movement: Discovering how to use your body posture as a quiet “vocabulary” that replaces the need for forceful cues.
  • Energy as Language: Understanding how internal tension may be communicating mixed signals, and learning to center yourself to provide clarity for the horse.
  • Leadline as Communication Enhancement: Reimagining the lead not as a tool for control, but as a sensitive communication wire that transmits subtle messages of intent and direction between you and the horse.

THE RHYTHM OF THE WEEKEND

This unmounted clinic provides a safe, low-pressure environment to build your skills progressively. Because we are always listening to the horse with respect, this approach is accessible and clear for everyone, regardless of size or physical strength.

  • Day 1: Decoding the Language. We begin with guided observation of the 13 Hands herd. You will learn to see the “vocabulary” in action and practice the gestures, postures, and signals (GPS) used to answer the horses’ most pressing questions regarding safety and trust.
  • Day 2: Moving in Harmony. We move into the arena to explore communication at liberty. You will learn how to use your energy and presence to invite the horse into motion, fostering a relationship based in curiosity rather than compliance.
  • Day 3: Refined Connection. We apply our communication skills to purposeful groundwork and obstacle play. You will learn to use a lead line in connection with your energy, intent, and body language to offer guidance, discovering improved harmony and balance in movement. Further refinement can be experienced by transitioning to use of a neck rope in place of a halter and lead line, thus testing your newfound skills of communication without halter pressure.

FROM OBSERVATION TO CO-CREATION

When we move together, our communication becomes more complex. This clinic is about maintaining the quiet nuance of the horse’s language even as the pace increases. When you lead with your energy rather than your muscles, the horse stops being a subject and becomes a co-creator of the movement.

WHAT YOU’LL TAKE HOME

You will leave this experience with more than memories; you’ll have a practical toolkit for a lifetime of better communication:

  • An Equine Decoder System: A foundational vocabulary of gestures, postures, and signals you can use with any horse, anywhere.
  • Increased Body Awareness: A deeper understanding of your own physical presence and how to work with your energy to create a safer environment.
  • De-escalation Tools: The ability to navigate conflict or resistance by addressing the communication gap rather than increasing pressure.
  • A New Perspective: A permanent shift in how you view the sentient world, grounded in the knowledge that true connection is always a two-way street.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

While it is open to all, Deepening the Bond is designed for those with some horse experience or a prior introduction to Horse Speak. This clinic is the next step for those ready to move from understanding the language to an active, collaborative partnership.

  • Horse Enthusiasts & Owners: Individuals who have a foundational comfort level around horses and are ready to bridge the gap between decoding signals and moving in harmony during groundwork.
  • Professionals & Trainers: Looking for the missing link to resolve behavioral challenges and refine their handling through a quieter, clearer partnership.
  • Rescue Volunteers & Advocates: Seeking to provide better emotional and mental support for horses in transition by building trust and clarity through mindful handling.
  • The Continuing Student: Those who may have attended a previous clinic or are familiar with the Horse Speak method and want to practice applying the “GPS” (Gestures, Postures, Signals) in an arena and liberty setting.

*Participating in this workshop helps raise much-needed funds for 13 Hands Equine Rescue. This very special farm offers a peaceful sanctuary, where almost 200 horses and other equines are healing and finding their way to a new purpose after abuse, neglect, and wild capture.

13 Hands Equine Rescue – More than just a location…

When you join us at 13 Hands, you are entering an extraordinary landscape of deep restoration and inspiration. Nestled on 100 expansive acres in New York’s Hudson Valley, the rescue offers a stunning natural environment with sweeping views of the surrounding hills. This land is more than a backdrop; it is a quiet partner in all of our offerings, supporting the transition from vigilance to vitality that so many of us are seeking.

With almost 200 current residents — from miniature horses and mustangs to donkeys, mules, and even zebras — the energy of the farm is palpable. Whether they are partnering in our equine-assisted learning programs, enjoying a well-earned retirement, or preparing for their perfect adopter, these animals have found new purpose here.

You will feel the impact of their resilience the moment you pass through the gates.

At 13 Hands, the healing of the herd happens alongside the learning and growth of our human participants, creating a rare and potent space for mutual transformation.
